Following a wildfire or a housefire, the smell of smoke inside your home can be debilitating. When smoke infiltrates a home, its tiny particles cling to your furniture, carpeting, clothing, walls, drapes, curtains, and more. The odors left behind can leave you feeling nauseous or with a serious headache and can be very difficult to remove.
At FP Property Restoration, our team has extensive experience repairing smoke damage. Continue reading to discover some of our helpful tips for getting rid of the smell of smoke from your house following a fire.
Don’t Use Candles & Perfumes
Many people are tempted to use candles and perfumed sprays to remove the smell of smoke from a home, but these items are completely ineffective. These items really only mask the odor of smoke and do nothing to actually eliminate it.
Air Out Your Home
One of the best things you can do after a fire is ensure your home is properly ventilated. Open all of your windows and doors to bring in fresh air and expel the smoke-filled air from your home. With severe smoke damage, opening windows and doors is probably not enough. We recommend also placing a fan at your front door facing inwards to more effectively bring in fresh air. It is best to try and keep this up for at least 24 hours to ensure your home is completely aired out.
Use an Air Purifier
In addition to circulating fresh air into your home, we recommend using an air purifier. An air purifier will work to eliminate contaminants in the air and leave it fresher and cleaner. To ensure your air purifier is as effective as possible, select one that has a HEPA filter.
Deep Clean the House
The key to eliminating smoke odors from your home is a deep and thorough cleaning process.
When cleaning your home, you want to be sure to:
- Clean all of the windows and mirrors in your home using either a window cleaner or a mixture of warm water and white vinegar in equal parts.
- Wash all of the clothing, bedding, curtains, blankets, and drapes in your home.
- Use a carpet shampooer or steam cleaner to thoroughly wash any carpeted areas in the home.
- Use a mixture of warm water and white vinegar (in equal parts) to wash the ceilings in your home.
- Wash all walls and hard surfaces in the home with either water and soap or water and vinegar.
- Use steam equipment to wash upholstered furniture.
- Replace the filter in your HVAC system.
