Residential Fires 101

residential fire

A house fire is one of the worst things that can happen to your home. Depending on the conditions, it could be contained in one room or spread drastically and quickly throughout. No matter what, it will leave you with lasting damage and extensive repairs.

Common Causes of Residential Fires

According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than one-quarter of reported fires in 2015-2019 occurred in homes. Even more impactful, three-quarters of civilian fire deaths were caused by home fires.

To prevent a fire at home, you have to first be aware of the most common causes of residential fires. According to research and studies were done between 2015 and 2019, experts have come up with this list of the most common causes:

  • Kitchen fires from cooking are responsible for 49% of fires
  • Heating equipment is responsible for 13% of fires
  • Electrical and lighting equipment are responsible for 9% of fires
  • Intentional fires make up 7% of home fires
  • Smoking materials are responsible for 5% of fires

Another interesting note is that while smoking is responsible for only 5% of home fires, it is responsible for 23% of home fire deaths, making it the leader in that category.

With so much opportunity for fires to start in our homes, we have to make sure we’re as diligent as possible about keeping fire hazards to a minimum and maintaining awareness around inevitable hazards at all times. Unfortunately, we can do nothing to completely eliminate fire hazards, but education and prevention can go a long way in protecting yourself and your home.
