3 Tips for Dealing With Water Damage

water damage

Water can cause a great deal of damage in your Tallahassee home. Whether it’s from heavy rains and flash floods, or because you’ve experienced a burst pipe, the results can be catastrophic. Knowing how to handle the situation and remediate water damage is a crucial consideration for moving forward. Here are three important tips for dealing with water damage.

1. Pull Up Wet Carpeting

If your flooring has gotten wet, you’ll need to immediately pull up any carpeting or area rugs that might have been wetted. If left on the floor, mold and mildew will begin to grow under the carpet, and even within the fibers of the material. Pull the carpet up, and find someplace outside where you can hang it or lay it so that it will dry, exposed to the sun. Note that you’ll likely have to pull up the carpet padding and dry it as well.

2. Use Fans to Start the Drying Process

One of the first things you need to do is control the moisture in your home to help prevent the growth of mold and mildew, and to start drying the water out. You can use fans to help you achieve this – both box fans and oscillating fans can help to dry things out nicely. Place fans so that they blow over the exposed damp areas of flooring where you removed the carpet.

3. Get Professional Help

In many instances, water damage is significant, and cannot be remediated by the homeowner. In addition to alerting your insurance company, you need to get in touch with an expert water remediation company.
